You might be surprised to learn that there is no direct law in California that says you cannot drive with a dog in your lap. However, there are other rules that might apply:
- Reckless Driving (Cal. Veh. Code § 23103): If a dog in your lap causes you to lose control or drive dangerously, it could be considered reckless driving. This can lead to fines or even jail time if the situation is serious.
- Animal Cruelty or Unsafe Transport (Cal. Pen. Code § 597a): This law is about treating animals in a humane way. If having your dog in your lap is seen as unsafe or cruel, you could face legal problems.
